Eva Reborn was born from a love of art and the belief that every reborn doll should feel like a small miracle.
It really did start in a garage
It started in late 2023 with a small worktable in a family garage in Cape Town. Reborn dolls had been a quiet hobby for years — rooting hair strand by strand, mixing skin tones late at night after the rest of the house was asleep.
The first Eva Reborn doll was made for a friend whose daughter was going through a hard time. Then a neighbour wanted one. Then a stranger from Johannesburg messaged on Instagram. Within a few months the garage was a proper little studio — paint pots on every shelf, half-finished bodies wrapped in soft blankets, a kettle that never stopped boiling.
Eva Reborn is still small, still handmade, and still done with the same care as that very first doll. We don’t outsource. We don’t mass-produce. Every face you see on this site has been hand-painted in our studio.
40 hours per doll — we’d rather get it right
A single Eva Reborn doll takes around 40 hours of slow, patient work. We layer up to 15 thin coats of heat-set paint to build realistic skin, with little blushing on the cheeks, knees, and tiny details most people will never even notice.
Hair is rooted by hand, one strand at a time. Eyes are individually picked and set. Bodies are weighted with cotton and fine glass beads so the doll feels like a real newborn when you cradle her.
It’s slow, careful work. We could speed it up. We won’t. Because the moment someone holds one of our dolls for the first time and gets that little catch in their throat — that’s the whole point.
